We could all use a serotonin boost every once in awhile  Some days things just aren’t going our way, and some days – no matter how good the day is going – we just can’t seem to find any happiness. People living with Borderline Personality Disorder especially have trouble when it comes to navigating their way out of challenging mood swings. Whenever the going gets tough, however, it’s nice to turn to a host of holistic remedies to get through crappy moods. If you’re looking for a few natural medicines to get you through your down days, here are three reliable ones to turn to.

Get more sleep

It’s tempting to live it up and stay up late, but not getting enough sleep could be severely affecting your mood and outlook on life. Not getting enough sleep causes depression, tension, anxiety, and stress. In fact, research studies have proven that not getting enough sleep reduces your emotional well-being and optimism levels and sometimes even causes physical pain. If you want to boost your mood, go to bed at least an hour earlier each night, take occasional naps, and don’t abuse your sleep cycle.

Exercise on a regular basis

Believe me, I’m not the biggest fan of working out, but studies have shown that hitting up the gym can help turn a frown upside down. When practiced regularly, thirty minutes or more of exercise has been proven to help people move past depression, anxiety, and stress. During exercise, your body releases endorphins and these trigger positive emotions throughout your body, similar to morphine – except exercise isn’t addictive. Exercise doesn’t just help your mood either; it also strengthens your heart, improves sleep, increases energy, and reduces body fat. So if you haven’t already, go ahead and incorporate a daily round of exercise through activities like walking, running, biking, dancing, swimming, etc.

Stop overloading yourself

Let’s face it: sometimes our lives get extremely busy and we can barely keep up with all the chaos. I’ve been there, but it’s important to know when to slow down and take it easy. Keep in mind, stress and anxiety are common triggers for depression, so if you’re dealing with depression, it’s important not to overload your schedule and take on more than you can handle. If you have a lot on your plate, break up the tasks and assignments into manageable pieces. Remember, it’s always okay to take a day off and relax.
